Why do we need Visual Impairment Awareness Training (VIAT)?
There are around 2 million people in the UK living with sight loss, and this figure is increasing. The RINIB estimate 4.1 million people will be living with sight loss by 2050. In addition to these people who have diagnosed sight conditions, yet more go undiagnosed.
The majority of these people won’t be carrying a white cane or have a guide dog or conspicuous dark glasses. Low vision is a very common hidden disability. The majority of these people are older, and may have considerable disposable income, nurturing these clients can reap rewards.
Learning about the low vision experience will enable you to identify hidden barriers and hazards in your workplace, and better serve your visually impaired clientele: saving and earning revenue.
